The Coach House

History

Built with the first house in 1891 to serve a four-lot estate — two carriage bays, stalls, a tack room, and quarters above for the people who ran it. Forty by twenty-eight, and the second largest building on the property. Original carriage doors onto the forecourt, original hay door on the gable. Charging was added during the restoration; the bench along the back wall was not, and predates everyone. The upper floor is still quarters, which is what it was built as.

Right now

The replacement entry tile is stacked along the back wall, and there is more clamped timber in the south bay than there is room for.

• The hay door

  Original, centred on the east gable, now glazed. It is the sitting room's principal window upstairs, and it looks down over the carriage turn and the gate — whoever is up there sees every arrival before the house does.
